Farming Philosophy...
Black Valley Farm, while not certified organic, strives to harmonize our practices with the way nature intended things. We use no pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers while growing our fruits and vegetables. Our animals are raised without the use of antibiotics whenever possible and are allowed to freely graze in open pasture. Realizing the importance of our stewardship to the land and it's inhabitants, both human and animal, we strive to make conscious decisions. Nature is indeed full of surprises and nothing is constant or pre determined. Conforming to our unique micro-environment here in Black Valley is an art in the shaping.
As sustainable farms grow and multiply accross the country more and more communities are reaping the benefits of farmer-consumer relationship. Before we ever began farming we valued the knowledge of where our food came from and how it was grown. Health is becoming a growing concern in our country and with this in mind we urge you to consider what you are feeding your body.
Small sustainable farmers are under intense pressure by having to compete with industrial farms run by large corporations. Although our food products are almost always much healthier, we simply cannot produce our products as cheaply as the corporate farms. Most small farms (us included at present) have to depend on off-farm income from second jobs. As small farmers are forced out by large, factory farms, the quality of our food, our environment and our food security is in danger. This is especially true in our area. In Black Valley alone quite a few muli-generational farms have been forced to cease operating and sell of their land.
So, the next time you need vegetables, fruit, eggs or meat, skip the trip to your local Walmart and go instead to your local Farmer's Market or small farm. For a few cents more, you can get very wholesome, nutritious food grown by people who care about the land, plants and animals they raise.
There are numerous web sites to point you in the direction of someone in your area striving to stem the tide of corporate farming and place this valuable responsibility back into the hands of the small local farmers. Check them out. Your health as well as your childrens' is only a click away. You never know, you might even make some friends along the way...
