Nubians
Outshone by breeds with higher production rates, Nubains are not as popular as they once were. When we began looking to start our herd in 2009, it took us quite a bit of research both on-line and through word of mouth to finally find a breeder who was kidding registered stock within a reasonable traveling distance.
Black Valley Farm is pleased to have started our dairy herd with three registered does. Our beatiful Nubains are now our pride and joy.
Our goal is to start small by breeding two or three does a year while trying our hand at milking and see where it leads. Cheesemaking has been a long time ambition! Nubians produce less volume than Alpines but have a higher butterfat content. They are considered a dual purpose breed and have a longer breeding season than other dairy goats. We of course love the long pendulous ears and "Roman" nose, characteristics which they share with the Boers.
As with all of our livestock, we have sought out breeds with docile temperments and the desire for human companionship. Our girls never miss an opportunity to nuzzle! If you are looking for a useful addition for your barnyard a Nubian is ideal....
A Bit of History:
1910-11 The "Nubian" breed was recognized, a herdbook begun with 459 animals, and a breed standard established. In the next two years 61 more animals were allowed to be considered as foundation stock.
1909-1913 Mr. J.R. Gregg imported a total of five Anglo Nubians to California, establishing a registered breeding program that produced 40 registered Nubians by 1917.
1922, Dr. Charles P. Delangle with the aid of Mrs. Mary E. Rock, her brother Dr. Charles O. Fairbanks, Frenchman Joseph Crepin (author of La Chevre in 1918), and others imported the first documented group of French Alpines; 18 does and 3 bucks. These goats came from France where the Alpine is the most popular breed. The French had bred their version of the Alpine to a consistent size and very productive animal. All purebred Alpines in the United States descend from this importation.
Our kids will be offered for sale to the public as pure-breed registered stock...
